Heavy fines may result from breaches of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which comes into force in May this year – but US firms are not very well informed about it, says Toby Duthie, founding partner of Forensic Risk Alliance. He says that personal data is treated very differently in the US, a cultural difference that may prove costly given the apparent political will to enforce the new rules.
