Legal poaching continues in Europe

Sidley Austin and Freshfields have hired private equity teams from rivals in recent days.

Two global law firms have bolstered their European private equity teams, hiring partners from its rivals.

Sidley Austin has taken on a seven-partner group in Munich from rival Kirkland & Ellis. The group is headed by private equity and M&A lawyer Volker Kullmann. He will be joined by tax partner Roderic Pagel, corporate partners Björn Holland, Christian Zuleger, Marcus Klie and Nicole Schlatter, and finance/capital markets partner Markus Feil.

Freshfield’s managing partnership have voted to hire a five-partner private equity team from Ashurst in their Paris office, according to Legal Business.

The team includes Guy Benda, Nicolas Barberis, Stéphanie Corbière, Yann Gozal and Laurent Mabilat. Barberis counts Ardian and Charterhouse Capital Partners as clients.

The private equity legal market has seen significant hiring activity in recent months as global law firms add to the practice area in multiple locations.

US law firm Morgan Lewis announced it hired a team from Orrick in Hong Kong this week, as reported by pfm.
