SEC to hold private fund exam seminars

Registration is now open for a series of seminars discussing deficiencies observed in the commission’s exam program, addressing such hot topics as fees and expenses, cybersecurity, custody and valuations.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will be hosting a series of seminars to discuss the risks, priorities and deficiencies its staff has observed both in its exam program and during investigations. The seminars are being offered to registered investment advisers as well as registered investment companies.

The events, which are co-sponsored by the Division of Investment Management; Office of Compliance Inspections and Examinations and the Division of Enforcement’s Asset Management Unit, will take place from June to September in six cities across the US. Each seminar will be three to four hours long.

Half of the seminars are specifically catered to private fund managers, including a June 18 event in New York which will tackle exams and SEC staff observations regarding cybersecurity and fees and expenses. On July 14, a similar private fund seminar in Philadelphia will discuss the exam selection process as well as fees and expenses, disclosures, valuation, custody and conflicts of interest.

For two of the events offered – one on June 29 in Chicago and one on July 14 in Denver—the commission is not only addressing these key hot button issues facing private fund managers, but is also offering a separate forum afterwards specifically for smaller investment advisers.

A full list of the seven seminars and registration links can be found here. GPs can register up until one week prior to their chosen event. Seating is limited and the seminars will not be webcast. If registrations exceed the capacity at an event location, CCOs will be given priority on a first-come, first-registered basis, according to the SEC.
